Stranger Things Poster Analysis

- With the amount of characters shown on the poster, it shows that there will be multiple storylines. This also suggests that they are the main characters so the audience will be seeing a lot of them and get to know them if they watch the series.
- The characters at the top of the poster look scared and are positioned so that it looks like they are hiding behind another person. This suggests that maybe throughout the series, there may be something that may threaten them.
- The use of the stars in the sky connote space and the sci fi genre. This shows that the series may contain some typical sci-fi conventions such as the supernatural, monsters etc. The night also connotes eeriness.
- The character in the middle of the poster is shown to be slightly bigger showing that she may be significant throughout the series. This could also be connoted as she is positioned in the centre. The other characters are seen to surround her suggesting that they may be protecting her. This is reinforced by one of the characters holding a weapon - the baseball bat.
- In the background of the poster is a ominous figure emerging from a gated area with a restricted sign on. This could show that he may be the antagonist/villain.
- The title shown on the poster connotes a retro vine as it is written almost like a neon sign which could reference the 80s. This could suggest that the series may be set within this time period. This is reinforced by the clothing. The writing of the title also resembles that of a Stephen king film showing that there may be some intertextuality taken from some of his work.
- The clothing, bikes and setting suggest that the series is set in America. This is reinforced by the man who is in a sheriff uniform. The fact that there is a sheriff may suggest there is crime within the series.
- The 3 boys are positioned above the title meaning that they may feature as mains throughout.
- Themes that are shown in the poster include facing adversity as they are all facing the same way, ready to fight. Also, the supernatural which could be suggested by the centre character holding her hand out in a way that she may control something. Friendship is shown the close proximity of all the characters.
- The narrative of the series could include binary opposition reinforced by the use of the two colours contrasting, red and blue. Also, the fact that there are many children included shows that the story may be from their point of view.
- There is much intertextuality shown between the poster and ET with the use of the bikes and the moon.

Ghost Ship

Connotations:
·       Starts with happy, upbeat music and pink writing which misleads our emotions as they think everything is going to be alright which makes people more shocked when they get cu in half.
·       Lights are a significant focus and the boat is straight which foreshadows the straight wires which cut everyone in half . The boat looks like the Titanic which can tell us that there will be a bad ending. This would be prior knowledge of the audience.
·       Direct mirroring of the end shot (Birds eye view) with the beginning (Foreshadowing).
·       The singer is wearing red, symbolising danger, blood and death.
·       Violin strings - Foreshadowing the straight lines.
·       The music puts the audience into a false sense of security.
·       There is communication (E.g. eye contact) between the singer and waiter showing that they may be connected - could be the bad guys.
·       The singer leads everyone to dance on the top deck, so that the wire can kill more people. She says 'belato' which encourages the passengers to get up.
·       The singers gestures when singing symbolise the future.
·       There are harsh lines everywhere which cross the screen.
·       Music echoes and is slower above deck creating a ghostly atmosphere.
·       There is a statue in the background with no arms showing the future where their limbs are cut off.
·       The camera circles the but then there are sharp camera cuts into the different areas.
·       The young girl is singled out, the fact that she is the only child that is shown may show that she is the only one left.
·       Flowers are the first thing cut - Her childhood being cut.
·       The girl is wearing white showing innocence.
·       Lights slice across the screen - showing the harsh lines again.
·       Music is drowned out by loud sounds and bangs.
·       The pace of the scene speeds up.
·       The shots alternative from quick to slow motion movements.
·       Horror show sounds drown out music.

·       There is a change of focus to the wire which makes our eyes focus on the bloody wire.

Semiotic Analysis of Newspaper Front Covers

Intro to News, Tabloids and Broadsheets

Overview:
-Newspapers have been around since the mid 17th century (probably earlier in some forms).
-Until the 20th century (and the intro of audio visual broadcasting - radio/pathe news) newspapers were the primary means of bringing news to the public.
-Unlike news broadcasting, newspapers do not have to be impartial - they are allowed to show their political bias.
-They are largely self regulating. They have a regulating body- IPSO the independent Press Standards organisation (formerly the press complaints commission).
- Leveson inquiry 2011 - in response to allegations of phone hacking ate the News of The World (amongst others) was carried out. It suggested a code of conduct and tighter controls be imposed - nothing has really happened about this (apart from the new IPSO instead of the PCC)
- The newspaper industry is largely in decline in terms of print circulation. Newspapers have had to adapt and move online in a bid for survival.

Camera Angles

I was with Lee and Emily. I was put in place to what angle we were filming. Emily was in charge of the camera and filming and Lee was the voice over reading out the different types of shots and what they were usually used for and what they represent.
The following shots, angles and movements were from the following sheet.
